Life Can Change in an Instant: Reflecting on the DC Plane Crash
I’ve been following the heartbreaking reports about the American Airlines flight from Wichita to D.C. that tragically collided with a military jet, and my heart feels so heavy. Even though I didn’t personally know anyone on that flight, I can’t stop thinking about the families who lost their loved ones in an instant—the ones who were waiting at the airport, expecting a safe landing, only to have their world shattered in the blink of an eye.
One particular story struck me: a husband who received a text from his wife just 20 minutes before landing, telling him she’d be home soon. And then, in a moment none of us can truly prepare for, she was gone. It’s terrifying to think about how fragile life is, how one second we’re making plans for the future, and the next, those plans cease to exist.
As someone who’s been flying since childhood, I’ve always taken for granted the ability to take off and land safely. This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that nothing in life is promised, and it’s pushed me to reflect on what truly matters—cherishing our loved ones, letting go of grudges, and never waiting too long to say "I love you."
I also want to acknowledge that moments like this remind us to hold space for the grieving. If you or someone you know has been affected by this, please know that so many hearts across the country are mourning with you.
